The garden is located on the edge the rural Mt. Diablo foothills. The closer a garden is to its original native state, the more more problems it seems to have with critters. Because of the voracious gophers that infest this area the beds at the Buttercup Farms Garden are in raised boxes and lined with wire mesh.

The original beds at the garden were built with recycled redwod 2 x12s from 1990's Berkeley Market garden called Kona Kai Farms. This wood looked recycled when it was in Berkeley. By Spring of 2010 they had extreme weathering and physical as well earwig and termite damage. We are re-using what's good in the old boards for blocks, borders and stakes.

Now comes the economically daunting task of replacing the old beds with new roughsawn redwood. We have replaced 22 beds so far in the eastern half of the garden. We plan to rebuild and replace the other 23 beds this year. But we're going to need some financial help to do it. Let us know if you can help. Thanks!
