The Angels Camp World Mercantile & Gallery of Arts opened May 1, 2008
in a vintage 1889 general store building in historic Angels Camp, CA. This
wonderful building, owned by Angels Camp native Mrs. Betty Weider, was operated
by her brother Will as a general store for many years. Buttercup Farms is
honored that Mrs. Weider selected our proposal for the space from among
the many that were submitted for her consideration. Thank you, Mrs. Weider!
Angels Camp is one of the original California Gold Rush towns located on
scenic Highway 4 in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada, and is perhaps best
known from the world-famous short story written by the legendary Mark Twain,
“The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County.” To this day,
Angels Camp hosts the Jumping Frog Jubilee as part of the annual Calaveras
County Fair held during the third week of May. The larger Calaveras County
area is renowned for its beautiful landscapes – soft rolling hillsides
dotted with California live oaks, cascading streams, breathtaking caverns
– as well as numerous monuments and markers of historical interest
befitting its bygone gold rush days.
In establishing the World Mercantile & Gallery of Arts, Buttercup has provided an opportunity for gifted artists from many countries to become the architects of their own success by bringing their unique crafts, talents and stories to the public. Most of all, we have created a lively, interactive space where customers can enjoy themselves and have a good time – perhaps play an African drum, meet an artist, create a small piece of art, ring an ancient Balinese gong, take part in a workshop or other special activity, have some ice cream, get a snack or tap into the internet – in an environment filled with life and creativity!
Included on the ground floor is our global marketplace,
featuring unique handcrafted items and antiques from all over the world,
as well as special musical instrument and children’s sections. Patrons
may also meet, watch and interact with our professional artists on site
who are eager to share their tips and talents with members of the public.
Should anyone become hungry or thirsty, the Angels Camp World Mercantile
& Gallery of Arts is proud to offer a tasty variety of tempting treats!
